Hi Kevin; This report is really interesting. What a difference a year makes. Another area of interest involving bluebirds is the flocks that stay in the state, and the ones that stay in other states year round and is it a particular race ie: western bluebird, eastern etc. all 3? Sue

Subject: [Bluebird-babble] Updated Numbers Reported to Cornell's TheBirdhouse Network
In mid-October I sent out a message about the remarkable increase in reporting from Colorado this year. Well, it seems that message was a little premature, a lot of the data hadn't been posted yet. I just looked at Cornell's totals again and they're dramatically higher than even the October numbers. Here are some of the more significant changes in the Total Number of Eggs category, which is what I reported in October:
- House Wren eggs went from 239 in October to 272, which is almost quadruple the average of 73 for the previous 3 years.
- Mountain Bluebird eggs totalled out at 622! About double the October number, and much higher than the previous high of 490.
- Tree Swallow eggs went from 306 in October to 383, almost triple last year's total.
- Violet Green eggs, which had averaged around 60 in previous years, ended up at 273.
- Western Bluebird eggs skyrocketed from 242 in October to 797! That's about 15 times the total reported last year!
...and there may still be unreported data yet to be posted!
What these dramatic increases point to is the fact that a lot of folks have started reporting your data to the national database. And that increased reporting is going to pay big dividends for our little blue friends as the scientists and researchers will have much more complete and comprehensive data to study, which will lead to better solutions to the problems the birds face.
Thanks again to all of you! You are making a big difference!
