Hi Bob

thanks for the post - Although there are lots of grasshoppers around, I am not sure that there are many other insects. Hopefully the little rain we got will get things started. I've got a lot to learn!

I have found that when they start a nest and then move to the next box the cause is most likely lack of food. They will also not start incubating until there is adequate amount of food in the area of the box. We have had egg in the nest for 10-14 day before they start incubating.

  Thanks Kevin

I am just trying to figure out what is going on. A nest was started in Box 1 and then abandoned before a cup was built. A nest was started in Box 2 and then abandoned (I thought) before a cup was built. Then it rained and the next day the male was displaying to a female (new bird?) at the second box. Maybe they stopped building and were waiting for the rain - it has been very dry and windy all March and April here.

Not something I've seen documented anywhere, so I'm guessing the answer is no. I do believe that sometimes a pair will start a nest, then abandon it partway through to build one somewhere else.
