Hi Sue
I have only been here for about 1.5 yrs so I do not know how usual or unusual it is. This flock was not here last winter that I noticed. We did, however, have a flock of 500 on the 2005-2006 Florence Christmas count about half way between my house and Florence. I think the abundance of juniper berries has a great influence on Mountain Bluebird winter flocking/distribution in this area. In this area last winter there were almost no juniper berries while this year the berries were super abundant.

Thanks for sharing this info. I have heard for several years now that there is resident group of Mt. Bluebirds in southwest Colorado. Is this a usual group for you each year? Sue, Centennial

Hi Sue and everyone
I live about 8 mi ssw of Florence at 6100 ft in Pinyon-Juniper country. All this winter I have had a flock of Mountain Bluebirds feeding on this years abundant juniper berry crop - the flock has varied from 25 to 80 birds. This flock departed sometime shortly after February first so I assume they should be showing up farther north by now. Since Feb 1 I have only seen an occasional pair within a five mile radius of my property.
