Sunday, February 24, 4-5:30 p.m., Boulder REI store, 1728 28th St.
Lon Robertson, director of the Piñon Canyon Expansion Opposition Coalition, will speak to Boulder County Audubon, the Indian Peaks Group of the Sierra Club, and the Boulder County Nature Association at a special public meeting, Sunday, February 24, 4-5:30 p.m., at the Boulder REI store.
Robertson's group has been instrumental in resisting the Army's proposed expansion to the size of Connecticut of southeastern Colorado's Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. This expansion could eliminate much of the Comanche National Grassland, along with hundreds of thousands of acres of private ranchland. Potentially affected lands contain dozens of Plains Indian sacred sites and the longest dinosaur trackway in North America.
Robertson's talk will provide a brief history of the Piñon Canyon issue, from the original taking of 238,000 acres in 1983 to the current plans of an additional 418,000 acres. It will also include an update of the past and current legislation being considered in the state and nationally. A short introductory talk by Steve Jones will focus on some of the natural treasures found in southeastern Colorado's unique canyon country.
Lon Robertson is a fourth generation rancher from the Kim and Branson, Colorado, area. He and his wife Anita work and live on the family ranch in the area that was homesteaded in 1916 by Lon's grandfather and grandmother.
Please join us in this important discussion about saving an ecological and cultural treasure.
