Protect Colorado's Wildlife from Poorly Planned Energy Development
Dear Pauline,
Your support is needed for common sense rules to balance protecting wildlife and the environment with the current oil and gas boom in Colorado. We urgently need your help to make sure that wildlife populations—like Colorado's treasured grouse and elk—are sustained and human health is protected while the energy developments continue.
Last year, the Colorado legislature passed bills to minimize the impacts to wildlife of oil and gas development (House Bills 1298 and 1341). Now, the Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission has proposed rules for enforcing these laws. The draft regulations will go a long way toward protecting grouse and grassland birds from poorly planned energy development so that future generations will be able to enjoy Colorado's abundant wildlife. But, the oil and gas industry has pulled out all of the stops to defeat these rules. We need a massive outpouring of public support for the proposed rules!
Please send a comment to the Commission in support of the regulations. Make sure they know that Coloradans support moderate, balanced rules designed to protect wildlife and human health in the face of intensive oil and gas development.
According to Audubon Colorado's executive director, passing these rules is one of the most important conservation opportunities that Colorado has seen in at least the last 5 years. Governor Ritter recently stated that Colorado has seen a 500 percent increase in oil and gas wells in the past decade, and forecasts predict up to 150,000 new wells could be drilled here over the next 30 years. Colorado wildlife is facing a crisis.
The deadline for the public to submit comments is this THURSDAY, MAY 29. We know the oil and gas industry is actively opposing the draft rules—the Commission needs to hear from people like YOU who want the needs of wildlife balanced with further oil and gas development.
Please send your comments to the Commission today.
