[Douglbirds] Red Winged Blackbird & Chipping Sparrow

Last Tuesday the 26th I was delivering birdseed to Jane Smith who lives at
the very end of E. Willow Creek Rd in Castle Rock. While helping her shovel
off her decks we noticed a lot of birds next to the house in the pine trees.
They were Red-winged Blackbirds and there must of been over 50 of them. The
trees were loaded. Probably waiting for us to leave to clean up on
sunflower seed.

The 29th, while talking to Shirley Bowers about what birds she had at her
feeders, I had dozens of birds at the feeders including two chipping
sparrows.

Buzz reported seeing a group of 4 or 5 pygmy nuthatches Monday, Dec 11
and yesterday I also saw the little ones--the first we've had this
fall. Not as many spotted towhees as normal. We have seen no pine
siskins-none. Otherwise, we're seeing pretty much our usual fall birds
in normal numbers. Keep up those good postings. They brighten our
days. Shirley and Buzz Bowers

Hi, Folks: As we were returning home from Castle Rock on Highway 86 at
exactly 12 noon today, Buzz and I both spotted a Belted Kingfisher
sitting on the electric (telephone?) wire where the highway crosses
Cherry Creek just west of Franktown. First time we've seen one here so
late in the season. What a thrill! Shirley Bowers

Like at Buzz and Shirley's, Pygmy Nuthatches are back at our feeders. The
closer we get to the Winter Solstice, the more I see them each fall.

For finches, occasional Pine Siskins join the few American Goldfinches, and
an unusually large flock of House Finches.
One House Finch is a leucistic.

Lots of juncos, especially Slate-colored; only one or two Spotted Towhees.

And a little burst of Golden-crowned Kinglets has come in! They're the
tiniest birds here now; that baker's dozen of Wild Turkeys still being the
largest.

Ron Kmieciak just called to report a Bald Eagle feeding on a fish in the
pond below his house.

He also had a couple of Golden Eagles two days ago, eating a rabbit. What
fun to have these spectacular critters.

Has anyone had any unusual visitors during this storm? I had four
red-winged blackbirds this morning, haven't seen them in awhile, nothing
else though, same group, juncos, tree sparrows, goldfinches, towhees, scrub
jays, blue jays, magpies, few chickadees, flickers, downy woodpeckers, no
nuthatches.

Interestingly, the only unusual birds I had from the last 2 snow storms
were 2 Red-winged Blackbirds. This is only the 2nd occurrence in 3 years.

How interesting! I also had one red-winged blackbird yesterday. Bushtits
come nearly daily( 8 to 22 at a time). We have one male ruby-crowned
kinglet
again this winter, over 50 house finches, over 30 American goldfinches, 12
Northern flickers and a Townsend's solitaire in addition to the usual.

At the top of the hill on the way to Kiowa, we had 17 bushtits (very unusual
for the area) clustered on the suet cake. I actually had to rub my eyes as
it appeared that the surface of the cake was moving! The "regulars" 20+
goldfinch, 12+ siskins, pygmy and white breasted nuthatches everywhere,
flicker, hairy and downy woodpeckers, and a cluster of starlings.
