With the cold and snow, our cast of characters changed a bit. Yesterday, cold but not yet snowy, we counted 90 some juncos. Just now, Urling saw a pink-sided type that had two white wing bars, a la White-winged, one of which she also saw a minute ago.
This morning, one Song Sparrow, one Tree Sparrow. AND one Chipping Sparrow. We ID the chipper with the following field marks:
Bill -- all pinkish; not two-toned like a Tree Sparrow.
Head -- Strong black eye line; light, wide line above the eye; crown streaky without much reddish (maybe a little).
Breast -- very white, no spot like a Tree Sparrow. It seems to me that Tree Sparrows tend to have a buffy tinge to their breasts.
We've seen towhees only occasionally this winter; one just appeared outside the office window, the first in 2 weeks.
