A couple of hummingbirds continue to ply our hummingbird flowers and feeders. With them come a couple of companions, sort of. During the day, quite a few wasps (who seem inclined to build nests in the drainpipes nearby). Last night, though, a bear ambled through the yard and pulled down two of the three feeders we have left out all summer under the eaves next to our eating room.
He continued on to the compost bin where he pulled off the top tier of the bin but didn't devour much except maybe some rotten strawberries. He also didn't really damage the hummingbird feeders -- only stretched an 'S' hook.
This morning I heard our first fall Townsend's Solitaire and saw our first fall White-crowned Sparrow (an immature, but I didn't get close enough to figure out which race). A couple of Wilson's and Orange-crowned Warblers continue in the gully near the house, along with a lot of sparrows (Chippings, one Brewer's, Vespers, and Songs), and bluebirds (all Westerns this morning) along the road.
One or two Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and several Lesser Goldfinches persist, and one House Wren. A Blue Jay seems regular now, along with a Hairy Woodpecker. From the hill across the gully, we see Steller's Jays and Red-breasted Nuthatches regularly now.
