Terri Doolittle, Research Assistant at the Kassler Center, saw a Northern Pygmy-Owl at Kassler (= Waterton) last week (Jan. 22).
Today she emailed that Jerri McKee of DOW picked up a dead pygmy-owl at Deckers (*up the S. Platte from Waterton), I guess this week. It had died of starvation.
This fits in, sort of, with a thread of impacts of winter on birds and other wildlife.I've had calls today from Susan Anderson who saw a Bald Eagle at Iliff & Emerson in residential Denver and Lois Yurcak who has watched a Wild Turkey saunter up suburban driveways a mile north of Chatfield.
I guess I could add two more incidents: a Northern Bobwhite has taken up residence in a neighbor's horse barn. We think it's part of a group that another neighbor bought last spring to train his dogs, and all of which escaped.
And Jackie Dunn, who lives south of Elbert, took photgraphs yeterday of a mountain lion with two cubs guarding and feeding on a deer carcass. Today I saw two coyotes in the middle of Castlewood Canyon Road, looking around and a bit frantic. We don't usually see them in the daytime.
