What we have seen on our property this month.
June 2007:
a.. The biggest surprise of the year is the Northern Bobwhite who has taken an interest in a woodpile behind our barn. For 2 nights I kept hearing this very distinctive call and finally tracked it down. I have taken some great photos of this beautiful bird.
b.. So far we have had 2 sets of young Western Bluebirds born in our Bluebird houses. There is one pair still "Nest Sitting".
c.. A Pair of Killdeer took up residence by our pond and had a clutch of 3 baby Killdeer.
d.. We have a resident pair of Hairy Woodpeckers living in a dead tree in the far back area of our property. She is being very bold right now and coming up to our nut & fruit feeder near the house to eat. She is getting very big and we are hoping they will nest and we will see some baby Hairy's later in the Summer.
e.. A Pair of House Wren's have moved into another bird house. They have been very busy working on their nest and she appears to just have laid her eggs. He is coming & going with bugs.
f.. We have 50+ assorted American & Lesser Goldfinch (and House Finches) at our main 2 Thistle feeders every day. We have gone through about 20 lbs of thistle already this summer. Many newborn Goldfinch mixed in.
g.. Chipping & Brewer's Sparrows are flocking to our back feeders each evening.
h.. We still have a fair number of Pygmy Nuthatches hanging out at the back nut & seed feeder. Not as many as over the winter, but we are seeing 10-15 each evening. White Breasted Nuthatches are abundant as well.
i.. Broad-tailed & Anna's Hummingbirds are making great use of our feeders & flowers right now.
j.. Tree Swallows are swooping down on our pond to drink each evening and eating lots of bugs. They keep checking out of of our Flicker houses but so far they have not moved in.
k.. Northern Flickers are coming & going as usual.
l.. Brown Creepers are still around climbing up & down the trees. I usually do not see them so much in the summer, normally just in winter.
m.. A few Spotted Towhee have been in flat feeders over the last few weeks.
n.. Black-Capped & Mountain Chickadee's are working the feeders in the evenings and have one as yet unidentified Chickadee.
