[Douglbirds] Parker ponds 3/13/07

The Creekside Park/Country Meadows/Saulsbury Park sewage treatment 
pond (all the same) had 2 Hooded Mergansers and 12-15 Common 
Goldeneyes.  Goldeneyes were putting on quite a display.  Males would 
come up from diving, stretch their necks straight out and up, flaring 
feathers near the head and appearing like a grebe for a moment.  Then 
several at once would jerk their heads back low over their backs and 
then jerk them suddenly forward.  Do other birds, e.g., Hooded 
mergansers, also throw their heads back and forward like this?
The Bar triple C/20 Mile Rd and Mainstreet pond also had 20 Common 
Mergansers, a pair of Hooded Mergansers, and, in the wetlands to the 
west, a pair of Buffleheads.
