On a campout Wed night at the edge of the Hayman Burn (132k acres) I was amazed at the number of birds using the habitat. The unburned portion was Ponderosa woodland at 7,800'. The location was about 1.5 miles north of the Teller/Douglas Co line along Hwy 67. There is a forest road that pulls off to the west (forget the number). This area is often used for target shooting!
At dusk and dawn we had a pygmy-owl calling. All night long we had a saw-whet owl calling. Bluebirds, both mountain and western, were very numerous and seemed to be engaged in territorial battles all morning. We had a dark-morph red-tailed hawk hunting the burn area. I rarely get dark-morph RTHAs up here. I did not locate a three-toed woodpecker, however, both downy/hairy woodpeckers, all 3 nuthatches and flicker were abundantly represented. Red Cross-bills are calling/singing throughout the day.
