We have several swallow type birds flying around here. One is checking out
a nesting box.

How do you tell a swallow from a swift ?

Subject: [Douglbirds] Barn Swallow

Today we had a Barn Swallow really checking out the area by our front door.
Looked like he was looking for a place to nest. We made ourselves visible
and he went on his way. I don't think he would like having us coming and
going so close to his nest, so hopefully he found a more suitable place.
When we lived in Palmdale, California we had a pair of Cliff Swallows build
a nest on the side of our house under the eaves. There was only one pair
and not a whole colony like you see on the bridges out here. I don't know
whether it is common for them to nest singly like that. I wasn't a birder
at the time, but remember the distinctive enclosed dirt nest that they made
on our house that they would peek out of the top of. I found them just
fascinating and was thrilled that they had decided to nest on our house,
although it was nice that there was only one pair since it does make a mess
on the house. They were extremely shy and di dn't like it at all when we
came out into the yard though.
