Hope everyone saw the large flock of sandhill cranes that spent the day
flying over Franktown on Friday, Oct 12. The birds were in the area most of
the day. We heard them long before we saw them as they would kettle and ride
the thermals up high, then fall into a V formation to glide southward a
little bit. Then they would kettle again, and repeat the whole display.
Almost 10 hours of these. Their distinctive call was the initial identifier,
but thanks to a pair of 20x binocs, was able to confirm by sight. Absolutely
outstanding. Difficult to count them as they just wouldn't stay in place
long enough, but I estimate 40-60 birds at one point. They split into two
groups about midday, but then came back together toward evening.
