Urling and I just spent a delightful two hours at Kathy & Howard Dressel's, inspecting their hummingbird. It has all the field marks of a male Broad-tailed except for the wing trill. One field guide says that they lose the trill in 'winter' when they molt their 10th primary wing feather (the one on the outside). Maybe that's the story on this gorgeous bird.
Lisa Crispin asked about mealworms -- you can buy them by mail order (look in a bird magazine for advertisements) or, easier, go to the Wild Bird Center south of Parker on Colo. 83 (Stroh Ranch shopping center, south of the King Soopers. Even though they sold the store, Kathy goes over there to nurture their mealworms. She in fact headed over there this morning.
