A report from 751 Willow Lake Drive:
6 p.m. Saturday night: 40 Snow Geese flew over; we heard them first.
Noon Sunday: our first Tree Sparrow.
And from Castlewood Canyon State Park:
We took our bird class there Saturday. Highlights: 40 Sandhill Cranes flying south. One Canyon Wren that managed to crawl around so that all 15 class members (and the two instructors) got great looks. Dick Vogel took quite a good picture. Lots of Pygmy Nuthatches along with White-breasted, and both chickadees. And piles of Townsen's Solitaires -- the junipers look laden with yummy berry/cones for the solitaires.
We noticed in the Park a similar pattern as at our house: Amazing numbers of Steller's Jays-- probably 20-30 during our walk; every morning nine descend into our yard to scarf up spilled seed, and we hear them every day. Our winter infusion of Blue Jays arrived Oct. 16, and we now have 5-10 of them on a regular basis. BUT -- the scrub-jays have almost disappeared. We see one at a time, once or twice a day. On the Castlewood walk, we saw only one.
Have other douglbirders noticed this pattern: more Steller's, fewer scrubs?
