We have had a large group of Steller's Jays and a lone BlueJay. We have only had a stray Steller's Jay or two in previous years. They really like the Black Oiled Sunflower seeds. We have had more Hairy Woodpeckers this fall.
It is interesting to watch how all the different birds relate to each other and who gets first feedings while the others just watch from afar until the first ones fly away. We watched a Hairy Woodpecker take sunflower seeds from our feeder, one at a time, then move from the feeder to the tree and hide the seed in the trunk of the Ponderosa Pine tree. My husband thinks they'll forget where they put them. We watched a nuthatch find one left in the tree trunk by the woodpecker and enjoy his "ill-gotten gain". We feel blessed to be able to watch and enjoy!!
I also really enjoy being able to share these sightings with others who enjoy watching some of the small creatures. It gives me a greater appreciation for Nature at it's finest!!!
