Urling and I just watched a Peregrine Falcon standing on the far side of the McClain Pit -- from 4:45 to 5:00 p.m. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to like us inspecting it with our scope, and it flew off to a perch in a dead snag in one of the trees along Cherry Creek -- still visible but lots farther away. I wonder if it had plans to come back to look for a meal.
As we watched, a Killdeer ran along the shore fairly close to the falcon -- I wonder if the falcon had just enjoyed meal or if the Killdeer figured it couldn't jump up from the ground, turn around, and pounce.
Otherwise the pit had half a dozen mallards, teal, and ring-billed gulls.
McClain Pit: Castlewood Canyon Road 1/3 mile south of Colo. 86.
