[Douglbirds] Year birds

We saw our first Violet-green Swallows yesterday morning, April 15 (and our first Tree Swallows last Wednesday).  

I went to our records for Violet-green and Tree swallows. (They cover 1998 to 2008.) 
 

Tree Swallow: 2008 arrival date:      4/8

            Our previous first arrival:      4/2/2007

            Our average arrival date:        4/18

 

V-G Swallow: 2008 arrival date:       4/15     

            Our previous first arrival:      4/17/2003

            Our average arrival date:        5/17

 

            Trees nest sporadically in our nest boxes. Violet-greens nested here in a box only once, in 2006, when we first saw them on May 22. I don't think the first dates for them provide a fair analysis of arrival dates; better to compare dates in Castlewood State Park.
