Carolyn,
My first guess for the birds at your thistle would be American
goldfinches in winter plumage.

Subject: [Douglbirds] Sightings
We just had a big red fox with white tipped tail trot down our road right by
the garage. My husband had seen him/her earlier in the week. We also saw a
large coyote running down the neighbor's road earlier in the week in broad
daylight. We have seen prints in the snow very close to the house that look
like coyote as well. We have had lots of pygmy nuthatches on our suet as
well as Steller's Jays and a couple of bluejays, and all of the types of
woodpeckers. We also have birds, I'm not sure what it is, on our thistle
feeders. It is olive head and back with black and white wing bars. Can
anyone help us with these?
