Turkey Vultures have begun returning to the canyons in Castlewood Canyon
State Park, and Saturday, April 19 is "Welcome Back Turkey Vultures Day".

Begun a few years ago by the Friends of Castlewood Canyon, the park's rangers
and volunteers present a morning of programs and the highlight on April 19 is
a rescued Turkey Vulture that resides at the Colorado Raptor Education
Foundation.

Events:
7:30 AM - 9:30 AM: Vultures Day Bird Watch.

Bring binoculars and walk with volunteer naturalists to where we'll see
vultures awaiting the morning thermals that ease them off their night roosts and
lift them soaring into the air. Then enjoy some easy birding near the Falls.
Meet at the West Side Trailhead on Castlewood Canyon Road, 4 miles south of
Hwy. 86.

10:00 AM: Meet a Turkey Vulture!

Join the REF and their rescued Turkey Vulture at the park's outdoor
Amphitheater. This is the closest most of us will ever get to a live Turkey Vulture, so
bring your camera.

The outdoor Pikes Peak Amphitheater is a 400-ft walk from the facility
shelters, a half-mile drive past the Visitor Center on State Highway 83.

For more information on Welcome Back Vultures Day call the park office at
303-688-5242.
Daily ($6) park passes can be purchased at the entrance station on Castlewood
Canyon Road (2 miles south of Hwy 86) and at the Visitor Center (5 miles
south of Franktown on Hwy. 83).
