State park pass required. If you do not have a park pass, there is a $10 fee to access Castlewood Canyon State Park. The East Canyon Trail is 4 miles long, but we will go as far as time allows us in the three hours of the bird outing – likely 2-3 miles. The trail is moderate starting on the mesa top and descending to Cherry Creek. It is not steep and there are stairs to ease the uphill/downhill climb, but expect some incline on the hike. Meet at the Canyon View parking lot, which is the trailhead for the East Canyon Trail. Overflow parking at the visitor center. Some of the birds we have seen before on the East Canyon Trail include American Goldfinch, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Cliff Swallow, Lazuli Bunting, Plumbeous Vireo, Pygmy Nuthatch, Rock Wren, Spotted Towhee, Western Wood-Pewee, and White-breasted Nuthatch
Meeting Location: Castlewood Canyon State Park (2989 CO-83, Franktown, CO 80116) – Meet at the Canyon View parking lot (also the trailhead for the East Canyon Trail).
