Welcome the Ducks Back to the Platte!

This is a mostly flat trek on hard surfaces along the Platte River where many duck species congregate for the winter. The nice thing about ducks is that they are big, as far as birds go, and fairly tolerant of birders. This means we can get up close and identify a number of species. We usually see a few raptors, such as bald eagles, red-tail hawk and kestrels. Gulls, the occasional songbirds, kingfishers and others are often present. Make sure to dress for the weather! We'll probably stay out for three hours or so, depending on what's to be seen, with a short loop to the north of 88th Ave., and a longer up-and-back south along the river. Bring binoculars (and a spotting scope if you have one to help with the long views up- and down-river). There's been a porta-potty at the trailhead all summer, but I'm not sure when they take it out, so you may want to plan ahead.

Meeting Place: Meet at the gazebo at Platte River Trailhead Park, located at the southeast corner of 88th Ave. and Colorado Blvd. in Thornton. The trip leader will send you directions and a map to the meeting place and a phone number with any last minute news, weather, etc.

Please Note: If you have registered and no longer can attend the walk, please contact the Denver Audubon Office (Rhonda Shank 303-973-9530) as soon as possible. There is a waiting list for those wanting to join the walk. 

•  Advance registration, including signing of the liability waiver is required. Walk-up or impromptu participants will not be allowed. 

• You are responsible for bringing your own binoculars, water, snacks and sunscreen for optimum experience 

• Cameras are permitted 

• This trip is accessible for those with mobility issues, and all abilities and levels are welcome.
