NIGHT NINJAS: OWLS (GRADES K-5)
What superpowers allow owls to hunt so efficiently at night? Students examine the skins of Great Horned Owls and dissect owl pellets to discover what makes owls similar to ninjas. Include a close-up experience with a live Great Horned Owl for an additional fee. (Add $3/student for materials.)
Satisfies Colorado Academic Standards for Science 2.1 and 2.3, and Math 3.1.
BIRD ADAPTATIONS (GRADES K-5)
Through a series of hands-on activities, students learn several evolutionary bird adaptations, including field marks, bird calls and songs, habitats, and other characteristics. Students play games, examine skins, and refer to field guides to practice their new skills.
Satisfies Colorado Academic Standards for Science 2.1.
ECOSYSTEMS EMBODIED:NATURE'S CHOREOGRAPHY(GRADES K-6)
In this partnership with the Colorado Ballet, students create a unique dance to embody components of an ecosystem. This type of kinesthetic learning enhances students’ understanding of how the parts of an ecosystem fit together like a puzzle.
Satisfies Colorado Academic Standards for Science 1.0, 2.0, 3.1, and 3.4 and Dance 1.2, 2.1, and 2.2.
Bird Vs. Human Skeletal Systems (Grades 4 – 6)
Did you know birds and humans share many types of bones? In this class, students build skeletons and play games to learn how bones set the shapes of animal bodies, how skeletal systems protect internal organs, and what adaptations help birds survive in the wild.
Satisfies Colorado Academic Standards for Science 2.1 and 2.2.
BEAVER HABITAT INVESTIGATION(GRADES K-5)
Learn how beavers build lodges, what they eat, and how they’ve adapted to both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Beavers live at our Nature Center, so students will experience their habitat in person and explore how beavers affect the South Platte Basin ecosystem.
Satisfies Colorado Academic Standards for Science 2.1 and 2.2.
ECOSYSTEM EXPLORATION (GRADES K-6)
Ecosystems surround everything. During this immersive field-trip, students learn the 8 ecosystems of Colorado, how ecosystems connect, and how to protect them. This field trip can be a one-time experience or two trips to compare how ecosystems change across seasons.
Satisfies Colorado Academic Standards for Science 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3.
BIRD BANDING: SCIENCE IN ACTION(GRADES K-12)
During May only, students stand feet away from wild birds at our nature center and observe bird biologists in action! Students learn about migration, nesting, and conservation and explore a riparian habitat. An in-class program on bird migration is required. Includes pre-trip class and fieldtrip.
Satisfies Colorado Academic Standards for Science 2.1 and 2.3, Math 4.2, and Social Studies 2.2.
