Event Details
Join us and celebrate the first Sunday of spring by watching the birds at the south end of South Platte Park. Our primary goal will be to find ducks—Northern Shovelers, Green-winged Teals, Scaups, Gadwalls, Ring-necked Ducks, Redheads, and Mallards—in the South Platte River and in the small lakes around the area. These ducks have spent their non-breeding season in this area, and many will soon be starting their migration to their northern breeding grounds. We will also be looking for songbirds like chickadees and nuthatches along the way. There is the potential to see raptors like Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, and American Kestrels. Birders of all levels are invited. Beginning birders are encouraged to join us.
We will be walking about 2 miles on mostly level gravel walkways. There are areas where we will have to walk on uneven ground and through grass and weeds to get closer to the river. It will be early Spring, so there may still be ice on the walkways in places, and the weather can be fickle.
We will meet in the big parking lot, at the east end of South Platte Reservoir, closest to the vault toilets. These are the only toilets in the area, and there is an accessible stall.
Meeting Location: 5198 W. South Platte Reservoir Access Road.
Trip Leaders: Primary Trip Leader Julia Gwinn and Secondary Trip Leader Cindy Breidenbach.
Please Note: If you have registered and no longer can attend the walk, please contact the Denver Audubon Office at 303-973-9530 as soon as possible. There is a waiting list for those wanting to join the walk.
