Event Details

PLEASE NOTE: You must register for this field trip (limit: 10 people) and complete the liability form when you register. Walk-up or impromptu participants will not be allowed. Other requirements are described below.

Travel along beautiful Clear Creek and adjacent areas for a 2-3 mile trip through a variety of riparian woods, lake, and marsh habitats where we might see woodpeckers, warblers, kingfishers, and waterfowl among others. We'll meet in the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt Youngfield Entrance at 3862 Youngfield Service Rd. where porta-potty restrooms will be available. We'll begin our trip on a wide asphalt trail, which we will share with bicyclers. After about a quarter of a mile, we'll turn onto a well maintained gravel trail. We'll continue along this trail for approximately 0.5 mile, which includes 100-200 yards of boardwalk.

At this point, if you wanted to go back to the parking lot, you could continue forward on the gravel path for about a quarter of a mile and rejoin the original asphalt path that we started on. Those wishing to continue will turn onto another well-maintained gravel path for an additional 0.5 mile. We'll cross a bridge over Clear Creek and then head back to the parking lot along an asphalt trail. It is 0.75-1 miles from the bridge back to the parking lot. The entire trip is relatively flat with only one gentle downslope where the asphalt path from the bridge crosses another bridge back over Clear Creek to return to the original asphalt section back to the parking lot. This trip is for all levels of birders, and beginners are especially welcome.

What to bring: binoculars, hat, appropriate outdoor clothing, sun screen, water, and a snack if desired. Scopes are optional.

Leader: Dale Campau, Audubon Master Birder candidate. For more information, please call Dale at 225-772-3043.

Note: Please plan to meet at the Youngfield entrance (the 44th Ave entrance is temporarily closed due to construction). Note also that this field trip is not accessible for those with mobility challenges.
