Event Details
Walk the Wetlands begins at the Denver Audubon Kingery Nature Center. The group ventures along the South Platte River through open fields and deciduous woodland, and by ponds and marshes. The walk itself is about 3 miles and takes ~3.5 hours, the time varying mostly due to weather conditions and the appearance of the birds. With the official beginning of spring some regular migrant ducks and songbirds have begun to trickle through the park, adding to our resident species despite our recent locally wintery weather. Green-tailed Towhee, Bushtits, and a Marsh Wren have all been seen near the Nature Center recently this year, along with a wide assortment of ducks and other waterfowl. Chatfield State Park is one of the largest staging areas for migrating and breeding songbirds in Colorado. Spring, fall, and much of the summer offer great looks at both migrating and breeding songbirds and waterfowl.
Each group on the walk is led by two Audubon Master Birders. Audubon Center & Trails is listed as a Hotspot on eBird under ‘Explore Hotspots’:

Join Master Birder Dina Baker for a fun spring morning birding trip to Sterne Park. This little, unassuming park is a hidden gem for birds and birders nestled in downtown Littleton. We will explore the areas around the park’s pond and creeks to view songbirds, various waterfowl, and the occasional raptor. Snowy Egrets, mergansers, and Cooper’s Hawks have all been spotted here in spring, in addition to being a great spot to view Wood Ducks.
Our trip will be 2 hours long on mostly paved, smooth surfaces. Due to the small size of the park, we won’t be covering much ground during our visit.
Meeting Location: Sterne Park, 5800 S. Spotswood St., Littleton, CO 80120.

Join our staff and volunteers as we explore the native plants and birds along the Cherry Creek trail. This month’s location will feature the 17-Mile Farm House Park, a historical Arapahoe County Open Space. Help Denver compete in the International City Nature Challenge (CNC)! This ongoing project documents urban biodiversity and engages residents in the nature found all around them. The 2023 Denver Metro Nature Challenge will take place from April 26 – April 29 utilizing the popular iNaturalist.org app to collect observations made of local wildlife or plants—anyone can participate using the app and their smart phone. We will be hosting a free event with Denver Audubon Master Naturalists to help introduce the app and we need community volunteers to help us create a snapshot of our wildlife around the Kingery Nature Center.

Spring is in the air, and with it, the return of many migratory birds that have been away all winter! Led by DA Master Birders, this trip is tailored for young birdwatchers and their grown-ups. Plan to explore approximately 3 miles along Clear Creek, on mostly flat, paved, gravel, and boardwalk surfaces. We hope to find many newly arriving insect-eaters, such as warblers, swallows, and wrens, and will also be on the lookout for more uncommon species of sparrows and shorebirds that may just be passing through on their way to more northerly breeding grounds!
Meeting Location: Wheat Ridge Greenbelt Youngfield Entrance, located at 3862 Youngfield Service Rd., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
